![]() ![]() Trail Threads: I ride roads far more than trails, but during my brief forays back into mountain biking this year, I traded bibs for off-road shorts from Kitsbow’s new Origin Collection, and I was very impressed. Kitsbow makes a full range of high quality mountain and road cycling apparel, like these Origin. This is the rock star of luxury bike gifts, whatever style of riding your giftee prefers. They also have numerous other road, cross, gravel grinder and mountain bike models. They are also surpassingly reasonable, considering you really can’t get a better frame: the bestselling Atlas road frame comes in five sizes, starts at just $3,999, you can get it completely built out and ready to ride from $5,700. It’s not by chance that they have produced some of the lightest road frames ever, and twice won Best Carbon Bike honors at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. Stock frames now account for more than a third of sales, there are dozens of dealers across the country, and these bikes are both gorgeous and extremely high performance. So Alchemy recently greatly expanded its dealer network and production of stock frames, most of the same models built using the same laborious bi-directional carbon layering. But most cyclists can still be fit perfectly with a stock frame, and this is cheaper and significantly faster - custom can take several months. I also rode one and it was hard to get off. I saw the entire process in vivid detail from fitting to CAD design to the precise cutting and forming of the hundreds of carbon fiber parts that go into a single frame, and it is amazing.
